Opinion #5: Structure is more powerful than decoration
There’s a point on every website where visual creativity needs to step aside and let clarity do the heavy lifting. And there is no better example of this than tables.
I love making tables.
If you haven’t found pleasure in putting together a nice tidy Google Sheet to help you understand something, you’re missing out!
Tables are so helpful because they trim away ALL the fluff. It’s just the bare bones. It visually summarizes your data in a way that’s easy to digest and manipulate.
And in web design, just as often as pretty design fluff is helpful, the fluff is hurtful.
Pricing, event details, schedules, itemized lists, quarterly reports… these are often not places for visual experimentation. They are places for structure, clarity, hierarchy, and simplicity to do their job.
People don’t want to decode information; they just want to understand it quickly so they can move on to the next step.
A clean, simple, logically structured table removes uncertainty. And when uncertainty is removed, people feel more at ease making a decision. Sometimes the highest form of design is simply getting out of the way.
But they don’t always have to look as ugly as the one above 👆.
