Hey friend,
Squarespace’s Circle Day was two weeks ago now, and I’ve got a few thoughts. Quick note up top, I love em-dashes and refuse to allow chatty-g to tarnish their good name. So I won’t quit them, even if you think this was written by AI.
Circle Day 2025
Historically, Circle Day has felt like a Squarespace-infomercial. I enjoyed going, since it’s been beneficial to meet other designers and hang out with my friends in-person, but the content of the event felt much more geared towards selling Squarespace than what I needed — insight into where Squarespace is headed, and facilitated personal conversations with professional Squarespace users, not the DIY crowd.
This year was different. Squarespace spoke to pro users in a way that made me excited about the future. Guillermo and Peter’s excitement about the Finish Layer tools was infectious, the crowds cheers were audible. Jeff presenting about Extensibility & Expanded API’s felt like the kind of conversation that a serious company has with it’s power users.
Furthermore, the in-person small group discussions allowed for structured mingling — a very important piece of any conference. Online session were also full of great presentations, from Marya talking about her very relatable relationship with finances to Henry talking about how to optimize your site for AI. I was the morning emcee and the chat was overwhelmingly positive.
Any complaints I had are around the edges:
The food was a bit frou-frou-y (crunchy tuna tostada’s are hard to eat while having a conversation)
9am - 5pm is a long day for a conference, would love 2 shorter days
The Circle Team doesn’t get paid enough
NYC is crazy expensive time of year (Also stop putting Circle Day on Ren’s birthday please, it’s too much planning for this simple man)
But the core of what this day is about — who they were talking to (professional designers) and the content they shared — was 10/10. This makes me really excited about the future of the platform.
Keep building,
Will
