CSS Variables Webinar & Doggie Dental Hygiene

FEBRUARY 19, 2025

Hey friend,

Let’s get into 5 new things you should know about.

#1 Webinar - CSS Variables (Members Only)

CSS Variables Webinar

I’m doing a webinar on CSS Variables tomorrow, Thursday Feb 20th at 11am — this one is going to be for members only. We’re going to be doing a shallow dive into how CSS Variables work and then I’ll show how I use them to access my site’s 5 color pallet and use them to build components that are cohesive with any Color Theme. Register to join in the fun (or get notified when the recording is available).

#2 - Be careful what you measure

Someone in the Code Curious community recently asked for some advice about improving SEO performance. The results were a little low (see above), but the website was freaking awesome. As I was sharing my thoughts about some performance improvements it just struck me how focused we all get on these numbers. As humans, we’re created to optimize things we see, but not things we don’t. And one metric that isn’t on a Lighthouse Performance Score is how “Cool” or “Fun” or “Engaging” a website is. Don’t get me wrong, improving SEO is important and a good endeavor (see SEOSpace for some excellent tools), but don’t miss the forest for the trees. Optimize for humans first, then SEO.

#3 Screen Studio

Screen Studio

This is the recording software (Mac only, sorry Windows friends) that I’ve been using on most of my videos for over a year now, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s far from an “advanced” video editing software, but it hits all the important notes while making it incredible easy to record and edit gorgeous videos. The picture-in-picture and zoom edits are done automatically immediately after ending a recording. I just do some light editing, then export. I sometimes need to use ScreenFlow if I need some more advanced features, but for a shorter Youtube Video or Instagram Reel, this is amazing.

#4 - Doggie Dental Hygiene

Vivi

This morning, maybe right now while you’re reading this, our senior puppo Vivi is going to have the rest of her teeth removed. It wasn’t an easy decision, but after a ton of research and speaking with some vets we definitely feel it’s the right decision. She’s 14, 15 at the end of the month, and still has a lot of energy and life left, and this seems like the best thing to keep her healthy.

Even thought the occasion is a little sucky, it’s pretty special taking care of an aging dog. If any of you have questions about senior dog care, let me know. My wife, Ren, is an expert on the subject, and I’ll pass your questions along—I’m less useful.

Expect some cute blep pics, coming to the socials.

#5 From Client Work to Selling Templates and Courses with Kate Scott

Apple | Spotify | Everywhere Else

Somewhat Useful Podcast

This week Christy and I debate some of the big questions in web design, like “do we really need that ‘copyright 2025’ text in our site footer?” Then we chat it up with the wonderful Kate Scott and hear about how she made the transition from client work to selling templates and courses, as well as her thoughts on hiring and her work schedule. Listen wherever you get your pods:
