Preparing for big projects and Collab videos with Chris SE

Hey friend,

We’re moving this week. On Thursday, we’ll begin our 3-day trek up to New York City to move into our new apartment.

Needless to say, moving is a big project; there's lots of moving parts and lots of decisions that have to be made all at once, but also in a specific order. All of this is made more stressful the fact that our new building requires you to schedule a 4-hour move-in window ahead of time, so we’ve got a hard deadline we’ve got to meet.

Luckily, this isn’t our first move. Nor is it our first time trying to meet a hard deadline. The world of web design and small business is full of big projects with big deadlines. Here are a few things I’ve realized about myself during these times that have made them easier:

#1 Repetition

Repeat your plan, again and again. Obviously, making a plan is important, but what’s more important is knowing that plan. And I mean knowing it, like deep in your soul. And for me, the best way to really know something is just to repeat it an obscene number of times. Ren and I have an Apple note of what we need to get done each day and we’re reviewing it multiple times a day. This has really helped me feel confident (as much as I can be) that I’m not dropping any balls.

#2 Ride your flow

When you’re in the flow of getting stuff done, keep going until you’re not in the mood anymore. Oftentimes, when I’m in the flow of getting stuff done, I’ll stop in the middle of my flow simply because I’ve accomplished the task or a goal at hand. This is a trap; keep moving. Work is much more enjoyable when in a flow state, and there will be plenty of work to do closer to the deadline, when I won’t necessarily be in a flow state. Keep pushing when you’re enjoying it.

#3 Communicate, communicate, communicate

As a recovering people-pleaser, my default is avoid letting people know when I have a lot going on and may be less available or responsive. I have this imaginary idea of myself that I could move across the country and still be super responsive to people. This is obviously unrealistic and, even more importantly, unnecessary. In our experience, the vast vast majority of people would rather have clear communication and a better response later on than a rushed response. And this week, we surpassed our 10,000th support ticket, so I feel pretty confident in this communication standard.

So, in an effort to take my own advice, I’ll be OOO Thursday and Friday this week and will be back on Monday in our new digs. In the meantime, check out the collab videos Chris SE and I did below!

Youtube Videos with Chris SE

Chris SE and I collaborated on a couple videos on Youtube. Chris and I both teach development and build plugins for Squarespace, so it was really fun to nerd out and deep dive some of these topics with him.

We made a video deep diving the attribute selector and how we use it for advanced targeting and building in Squarespace. Then I joined Chris on his channel for a walkthrough of my process for using AI to build and customize things in Squarespace.
