New Vertical Accordions Plugin and What I Do.

Hey friend,

A few weekends ago, Ren and I hung out with both of our families in a cabin in north Georgia. We’re lucky that our parents get along so well and we had a great time just being together and catching up. While we were there, we had the obligatory “So how’s work going?” conversation with our parents, which goes something like this:

(this conversation has been exaggerated for dramatic effect)

Parent: “So… how’s work going?”

Me: “Oh you know, pretty good! We’re staying busy.”

Parent (with a mildly inquisitive look): “Well that’s great, that’s great… staying busy with what, though?”

Me: “Well, with work stuff… building plugins, that kinda thing…”

Parent (eyes squinting): “Yes, but what do you actually do all day? Who tells you what to do?”

Me: “Those are great quest—”

Parent, continuing: “And what exactly is a “plugin” anyways? What are you plugging it into? Can you unplug it? Also, how does “the cloud” work? Can you help me get my pictures from 2010 back down from the cloud and onto my phone?”

For those of us who make our living in the digital world, I think it must be a fairly common phenomenon for friends and family to have absolutely no idea what we actually do, or how we spend our time every day. The best I can tell, most people categorize my work somewhere in the vague industry of “online things and internet stuff,” which to them encompasses everything from building websites to graphic design to helping my aunt recover her Facebook account after it's been hacked (only one of these things is actually something I know how to do).

I’m lucky in that my family has always been really supportive of my entrepreneurial endeavors. And while I think it’s fair to say that they may not understand the ins-and-outs of what I do each day, they’re grateful that it seems to be working. And I am too. There are definitely times when even I don’t really know what I did that day. But here’s the thing — I really love what I do. Not every single thing that I do, and not all the time, but overall, I love my business. I enjoy working in it more often than not, and I’m grateful to get to spend my time helping people build cool things on the internet. And even if my parents can’t quite understand the nuances of how CSS and HTML work together to create a custom component, they do understand that I love my work.

So, whether or not anyone else in your life understands what you do all day in front of that computer screen, I hope you love it.
