Hope you’re all finishing up the “last productive week of the year” (as I keep being reminded by clients and Ren) well and healthy. The Will-Myers team has been hit with a round of Winter Crud, with me and Abi taking turns being under the weather. If you’ve sent in a support ticket in the last few weeks and noticed a slowdown in our normal response time, that’s why. Thanks for hanging in there with us.
We’ll also be offline and enjoying the break from Dec 22nd - Jan 4th, but we’ll get back to everyone as soon as we return.
In other news, this week we launched a really cool website (in collaboration with one of my favorite designers, Mister Jones) for a really cool business. Mysha is a mom group for women who never thought they’d join a mom group. Their target demo is badass women who also happen to be mothers, and their website is *chefs kiss* one of my favorites that I’ve worked on to date. There are a ton of custom designs and custom components (several of which have already made their way into the Code Catalogue for Code Curious members).
This was one of those projects that was particularly enjoyable because the clients were great people, and fun to work with. Their whole business is based around community, and the way their team collaborated and worked together during this process was cool to watch, AND honestly… it made me a little jealous.
I, like most people with “internet jobs,” don’t have a big team that I work with every day. I’m lucky that I have Abi, my rockstar customer support rep and junior dev, who I talk to at least a few times a week, but being a web developer is more or less a solitary job. It’s a lot of sitting alone in a room at a desk and staring at my computer. While I love what I do and the business I’ve built, a little more human interaction every now and then wouldn’t be totally unwelcome… maybe you can relate?
Ren and I have been talking a lot lately about community because it’s something we feel like we’re missing, or at least would like more of. We don’t have co-workers, or family nearby, or kids to force us to interact with other people. We’re lucky in that we like most of our clients, and we really like each other, but having other humans in your life is a good thing — for people in general, and for business owners especially.
Anyways, these are some of the things that I’m thinking about heading into 2024. I’d love to hear if you relate or have any thoughts about community and connection in the age of remote work — especially as freelancers and business owners. And, while I’m on the topic, I’m really happy that you’re here and part of my online community. I’m always encouraged by how many of you, like me, are trying to make your way in the world and build a business and a life you love using your “internet skills.” I’m glad I can be part of your journey, and grateful to you for being a part of mine.

This was a super fun project with a ton of custom components — my favorite being the “How it works” cards on the Pods page.
