Hey friend,

It’s Summer Sale-a-palooza time! Now through end-of-day on Friday.

(I’ll wait for you to gleefully rush away to my website and check it out now…)

You back? I’m sure you’re so excited about the sale that it’s hard to concentrate, so I’ll try and make this next part quick.

There is a tension between starting vs running a business.

The energy that you need to start your business is much different than the energy needed to run a business.

Starting a business, or launching a new part of your business, requires creativity, conversations, and a bit of mental wanderlust — that feeling of being unsatisfied with the way things are, and nearly compelled to try something new. Running a business requires routine, systems, and organization.

Furthermore, almost no one is good at both of these things. The personality type and skills of someone who is good at starting businesses, coming up with new ideas, and launching new things is often the exact opposite of the personality type and skills of someone who’s good at running the day to day operations of a business.

So what should we do? If you’re a creative, wanderlust-type person, how do you put up with those boring tasks that your business needs? And if you’re a logical, systemic-type person, how do you get out of the weeds to think big and create a vision for your business that gives you direction and purpose?

Well, this may come as a shock, but I don’t have a “Follow These 3 Steps” type answer. We’re all different, our businesses are different, and the journey of starting a business and becoming a good business owner is going to look different for everyone.

However, I think just acknowledging that your business needs both mindsets and sets of skills is a good first step. We often demonize the “boring ole systems people” or those “unfocused wildcards” because they don’t match up with how we see the world. But the reality is, no matter where your strengths lie, your business is going to need strengths that you don’t have if it’s going to grow and run well.

And maybe, if we’re honest with ourselves, we might need a little of that other personality in our personal life too.

Keep Building,
Will
