Hey friend,
Squarespace has entered into an agreement to buy Google Domain’s 10 million domains, for $180M. If I was a Google customer, I’d be understandably upset, however, my bet is Squarespace is going to do a great job.
Google has a history of starting projects, acquiring a bunch of customers because of their enormous reach, and then killing the product. Think: Google Hangouts, Google Stadia, and more. Google really isn’t to be trusted with anything other than ads — and even that might be a stretch of the word “trust”.
But, I’ve been using Squarespace Domains since it launched and it’s been fantastic. The user interface is the easiest to navigate, and having website hosting and domain hosting in one place is the most straightforward way for someone to understand the connection between a domain and a website. From my experience, they are a bit more expensive, but only a few more dollars a year.
The biggest concern I have, is putting all my website eggs in one basket. There is something reassuring about knowing my website is hosted over here and my domain over there. Call it Separation of Powers, or whatever.
We’ll see how this transition eventually goes, but my gut is that this is going to be a good outcome for users and Squarespace. Google’s brand though, not so much.
