Hey friend,
I’m a doer. I jump into things quickly and start building as soon as I have an idea. Frankly, this is a great quality to have when you’re getting started in a business. My blog started simply because I was bored one Saturday afternoon, not because I planned it out.
Recently however, I’ve felt like I’ve been spinning my wheels. I’m focusing on things that don’t really matter, and I can just feel the stagnation it’s causing in my business. My days are super busy, but at the end of the day, I don’t feel like I’ve pushed my business forward. I’ve just kept it alive.
The quality that helps you in one area often hurts you in another, let’s call this the “helpful-hurtful” quality. My helpful-hurtful quality has been my default towards action over planning. And, much like a child can be brutally honest and point out something you need to change in your life, my business has been telling me that I need to change.
So now, I have regular meetings with my wife and my business mentor, Barney. I’ve asked them to meet with me weekly to hold me accountable for working ON my business, and not just IN it, and to keep me focused on my larger vision. I've created quarterly goals, and every week they help me prioritize the goals and tasks that will get me where I want to be long-term. I’ve been doing this for about a month and half now, and I’ve started to feel some real clarity and progress. It feels like my business is moving forward, instead of just in circles.
Being action-oriented is a good quality to have, but knowing when to get out of your own way and ask other people for help is even more important. I’m excited about where we’re planning to take this business, and grateful to have you along for the ride.
Keep building,
Will

MARINERS BUTTON STYLE TUTORIAL (FREE)

I recently saw this button style on the Mariners Church website and I loved it. So I recreated it in CodePen and put together some code so it can be used as a button style on your Squarespace site.
I’ve got a new YouTube video that talks about installing the code in part 1, and rebuilding it from scratch in part 2.
THE UNOFFICIAL SQUARESPACE
ENTREPRENEURS PODCAST

I was invited onto the Squarespace Entreprenures Podcast, hosted by Omari Harebin from SQSPThemes. We had a great chat and talked about Squarespace and the mentality of starting a business. Omari brought up an excellent point about how the story of David and Goliath can be interpreted as an allegory for the benefits of doing things your own way in business. Watch the YouTube video or listen to the Podcast below, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
CSS ANIMATION LIBRARY

I saw this CSS animation library being shared around on Twitter a couple weeks ago and have already used it on a couple of websites. CSS Animations are a little tricky, but if you’re familiar with them and how they work, this little library can be super helpful. If you’re unfamiliar with CSS animations, let me know and I can build a tutorial on them.
